We all like to think that we are law abiding citizens. But, the truth is many of us break laws every year without it even crossing our minds. Some of theses are broken out on the roads. Others, in the comfort of your home. And some, are broken to protect us from possible legal ramifications. If you think that you’ve never broken a law in your life, you might be surprised. Here are some of the most common laws that people overlook completely.

1. Piracy Laws

You wouldn’t you steal a handbag? You wouldn’t you steal a car? So, you wouldn’t steal a film would you? It turns out that you probably would. Judging by the fact that piracy levels rise each year, it seems like no one takes it all that seriously. In fact, the latest episode of Game Of Thrones was downloaded millions of times before it even reached the air. Admittedly, this one was HBOs fault, but it doesn’t change the fact that piracy occurred. Maybe, you adamantly claim that you’ve never downloaded a film or music track in your life. But have you streamed? While never seen as bad, if you’re streaming a film and you’re not using something like Netflix you are breaking the law. You might need to look at a criminal law site such as www.BrianZieger.com/.

2. Speeding

Come on, admit it. You’ve broken the speed limit at least once in your car driving along the road. Perhaps, you were simply in a rush to get somewhere. Or, maybe you just wanted to see what your car could do let off the leash. Either way, you’re lucky you weren’t caught by the police. Contrary to popular belief, road laws are still laws, not just regulations. If you’re caught speeding at an absurd speed, you may even face charges of driving without due care. These can even include a prison sentence. Of course, many of us will just drive at eighty instead of seventy, and it will go completely unnoticed. Mainly because the police car driving past you is going at 100 to catch another driver.

3. Throwing Out Junk Mail

Everyone hates junk mail don’t they? We throw it out all the time without even thinking about it. We probably don’t even bother to check who it’s addressed to, and that’s a problem. If it’s not addressed to you, it’s not your mail to throw out. You definitely shouldn’t open it that’s for sure. Opening someone else’s mail could get you in serious trouble. But it doesn’t stop people throwing out the mail of other tenants who have left. Let’s face it; they’re not coming back to find their Dominios fliers, are they? What are you supposed to do? Keep them all until the end of time? Well legally, yes.

4. Gambling

Ever gambled? We’re not talking about heading to the bookies or placing a bet online to make money. No, we’re talking about those late night poker games with the boys. Or, perhaps a fantasy football tournament at work. Both are illegal, and both will get you in trouble if you’re caught. But again, the police are probably never going to find out.

5. Singing Happy Birthday

Finally, the weirdest lawbreaking ever? That would be singing happy birthday in public. The song is copyrighted and owned by someone, so every time you sing it, you’re breaking the law. Those owners must be owed billions in damages.

These are the top 5 laws you’ve probably broken without even thinking about it.
