Hypothyroidism is a condition, which occurs due to the under secretion of the thyroid hormone. It is also known as Under-active thyroidism. The thyroid gland fails to secrete proper amount of the thyroid hormone in the body. The main function of this hormone is to control the body metabolism. Also, the body metabolism has impact on the temperature of the body, rate of heartbeat and the rate of burning calories. And the complication is gaining huge popularity these days. There are a lot of people, who don’t even know that they are affected by this disorder.
Hypothyroidism is a disorder, where the body lacks the sufficient amount of thyroid hormone in the body. The metabolic processes of the body get affected. According to the studies, around 10 percent of women are suffering from a certain degree of under-active thyroidism. It is now one of the very common disorders faced by individuals around the globe.
The major cause of Hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, which is an autoimmune disorder. The thyroid gland gets inflamed and the becomes incapable of producing the thyroid hormone. Radiation therapy, using certain medicines, radioactive iodine treatment, intake of very less quantity of iodine in the diet, surgery of the thyroid gland. Another cause is the problem of the pituitary gland. It fails to produce sufficient quantity of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Though the cause is rare, yet it may happen.
The major symptoms of Hypothyroidism are fatigue, gain in weight, weakness, difficulty to lose weight, dry and coarse hair, rough, dry skin, inability to tolerate cold temperature, hair loss, muscular cramps, depression, constipation, memory loss, abnormality in monthly menstrual cycle, irritability and reduced libido. It may also happen that the patient with this disorder will not show any symptom at all. But, it’s important to take proper care, if you’re suffering from the disorder.
4. Potential Dangers
Goiter is the major complication, which occurs due to the too much secretion of Thyroid stimulating hormone in the body. The thyroid gland becomes enlarged. If it is not treated properly, it may lead to myxedema coma. There will be confusion, low temperature of the body, but no shivering, reduced breathing and a lower heart rate. Also, hypothyroidism may lead to the risk of miscarriage, infertility, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes and even death of the infants right at the time of birth.
5. Recommended Diet
The complication of Hypothyroidism is a bit tricky. There’s no recommended diet. However, it is advised to restrict the intake of certain food items. These include soy products, cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts, turnips, kale, foods rich in fats like margarine, mayonnaise, butter, products rich in sugar since it has too much calories, processed food items, excessive fibrous food items and coffee. It is advised to prohibit drinking alcohol since it prevents the body from using thyroid hormone. It is advised to eat fishes rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, nuts, whole grains, fresh fruits, green vegetables, seaweed and beans.
