As someone, who has always struggled with anxiety throughout my life, I’ve had to learn how to reduce stress levels, so they don’t take over and affect my day to day life negatively. What might work for me, might not work for the person next to me. And, the great personal discovery that a person can do is to learn what best works and identify what we need to do to lower our stress levels. Here are the 5 ways that I’ve learned how to reduce stress naturally that might be helpful to you:

1. Put on Some Music
In high school, I was that person you always saw in the hallway with headphones in their ears between classes. Music has always been able to transport me positively to a new place. And, it’s been proved that playing calm music has a positive effect on the body and our brains. It lowers our blood pressure, reduces cortisol, a key hormone linked to stress. If you enjoy music, I would recommend you to try the classical genre, like Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Bach, etc. For someone like me, who does not enjoy classical music, I’ve learned to listen to my favorite sound of nature, The Ocean. It has similar relaxing effects to classical music. I like to listen to it if I feel anxious before sleep.
2. Change Your Diet
When I am struggling to find ways to control my growing anxiety, I got into the bad habit of binge eating and eating a lot of take-out. Although it tasted great in the moment, afterward I would feel sluggish, lazy and I just wouldn’t feel good about my appearance (because I knew that wasn’t helping), which led me into depression. Stress levels and a proper diet are closely related. Learning to plan ahead and filling up with nutrients, which come in fruits, vegetables and even fish (with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids) helped me resort to healthy eating that would reduce my symptoms of stress. When I adopted a new eating plan and started exercising, it didn’t make my stress disappear but it really did help me feel more motivated and excited about life. I never thought I would be the type of person, who would enjoy waking up early to go jogging or who would enjoy replacing pancakes with a healthy brown bread, avocado and tomato toast and homemade smoothie for breakfast! It will provide an answer to how to reduce stress naturally.
3. Get to Sleep Earlier
It’s common knowledge that stress can cause you to lose sleep. Let me tell you, lack of sleep is also a key cause of stress. This is a vicious cycle, which can cause the brain and body to be out of sync and only gets worse with time. It’s doctor-recommended seven to eight hours of sleep per night. While it’s hard to fall asleep when you have a million things running through your mind, learn to turn the TV off earlier, make yourself a warm cup of tea, get cozy on a comfortable mattress and stay away from your phone. Using your phone while trying to sleep is bad because the blue light your phone has activates some chemicals in your brain that help you stay awake. While it might keep you occupied to check your Facebook feed for the 70th time today again, it won’t help you to fall asleep quickly.

4. Meditate to Get Solution of How to Reduce Stress Naturally
I’m not a Zen master. But, when I started to delve into meditating, I learned that I didn’t have to be. The tools that I needed to become “present” or in other words, to achieve a state of being was already deep inside me waiting to be explored. I learned to focus on what’s around me. It helped me to slow down for a few minutes and appreciate what’s going on in my career and life pushing aside any fear or anxiety that I was feeling. I started off small, one day I was running late for a new job interview and started to psych myself out blaming myself for not leaving early, why I’m such a disappoint among many other negative thoughts. Then, I stopped and thought about what I read the other night about meditation and its benefits. I breathed in, I breathed out, I smiled and I began to feel a bit better.

5. Vent to Your Loved One
If you surround yourself with people who care about you, your feelings and try to understand you even if they aren’t experiencing what you are themselves, chances are you’ve got someone that you can talk to about your problems. Holding anything personal inside for a long time is proven to be destructive to our health. And, it’s important to learn how to open up and let people in. If you’re having a really bad day at work, step outside to speak to your friend/parent/spouse/colleague and let them know what’s going on. Even just one small chat can help to put everything else into perspective and will help you to get through the day knowing you have people there for you in times of need. It’s a great way to stress management.
