Feeling Down In the Dumps? 5 Ways To Stay Motivated and Conquer Your Goals

We’ve all been there before. Overwhelmed. Stressed. Burnt out. If it’s really bad, we may even feel hopeless. We feel like no matter what we do, we’re not getting the outcome that we desired. Then we start having doubts, start second-guessing ourselves and may even want to quit, but don’t do it! Quitting is the easy way out. It’s pretty much equivalent to failure. If you’re feeling unmotivated, here are some tips to help you lift your spirits and stay on-track so you can succeed in your accomplishing your goals.

Know that what You are Currently Feeling is Temporary

Emotions are a temporary state of being; they are not who you are. Acknowledge your emotions, whether it be stress or anxiety, and know that it’s okay to feel like such. By allowing yourself to experience the emotions, you will actually overcome them and return to a more positive frame of mind much faster. Like the proverb says, “this too shall pass,” so will your emotions if you allow them to.

Remind Yourself of why Your Goals are Important to You

Sometimes we’re so busy working towards our goals we forget why we started working towards them in the first place. Pause. Take a breath. Remind yourself of why you set out to achieve your goals. Think about the outcome of where you’ll be if you follow through and accomplish your goals. Remember that excellence doesn’t happen overnight; there is a process, a journey to achieving excellence. Like Rome, it wasn’t built in a day. Trust that your process will get you to wherever it is that you want to be.

Always See the Glass as Half Full

It’s no secret that the mind is a very powerful tool. Shifting your mindset from negative to positive can be very beneficial to your everyday life. Clinical psychologist Dr. Shauna Shapiro stated in recent her TED talk at TEDxWashingtonSquare, “what you practice grows stronger.” We can definitely apply that notion here. If you have a positive mindset, you will manifest more positivity into your life. However, if you have a negative mindset, you will manifest more negativity. You can never be parched if your glass is always half full. Bring yourself back to a positive mindset by doing your best to find the light in where you are now.

Be Present and Enjoy Yourself

As you embark down your path of achieving your goals, don’t forget to live in the moment. Be present and be aware of your words, your actions, your emotions and the moments in which you are living in. All of these things are a part of your journey, not anyone else’s. Your journey makes you who you are. You would not be who you are today if you did not experience everything that you have thus far in your life. So, be grateful for your journey, from the blessings you’ve received in your life to the lessons that you’ve learned through your trials. They have all played a part in shaping you to be you. As Buddha says, “The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future, or anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly.”

Have a Sense of Self-compassion

Many times we are the cause of our own stress. We can be really hard on ourselves to the point where we are self-deprecating. This kind of practice will only drive you further into the hole that you have dug for yourself. Instead, take a moment or two and practice some self-compassion. Be kind to yourself. Acknowledge that you are human, you have imperfections, and that’s completely okay. Dr. Kristin Neff states, “Instead of mercilessly judging and criticizing yourself for various inadequacies or shortcomings, self-compassion means you are kind and understanding when confronted with personal failings – after all, who ever said you were supposed to be perfect?”

If you are currently feeling unmotivated, know that you are not alone in your journey. You have several people around you that are willing to support you. You might have to do a bit of searching for these people but trust me, they are there. Yes, you will have to do the work of achieving your goals on your own. Nevertheless, it’s always good to know that you have people that are rooting and cheering for you. The journey may have its rough spots, but the rewards that you are going to reap are much greater and will be worth every bit of hardship that you had to or will experience. Remember that your goals are important and so are you.  Stay on your path and persevere because you are worth it.
