Some of us, although we love our homes feel like they could be a little cosier. All those gorgeous show homes you see in interior design shows really don’t help! If you want a cosy home, then read on! Here are some great ways to get a cosy home.
1. Play around with the Colors to Make a Cosy Home
Everyone’s home is a mesh of different colors. However, if they’re too unplanned or they clash a lot, it’s going to have a negative impact on the overall mien of your home. With each room, try to think of a specific scheme. For living rooms, I recommend dark and warmer colors for those relaxed evenings. Your bathroom and kitchen, on the other hand, could go with cleaner shades like greys and light blues.
2. Mix up the Materials and Textures
I’m not an expert in the psychology behind this. And, unlike other designers, I won’t pretend to be! What I do know is that contrasting textures and materials in a room can make it feel more warm and inviting. For example, if you have a velvet armchair in a room that feels like it comes on a little strong, contrast it with some shiny brass décor. Mixing doesn’t always go as planned. But, experiment to see what works in your home.
3. Bring Some of the Outside Inside
Little things that remind us of nature can make any space feel more homely. If you can’t put your finger in your home, then it may be lacking these features. Get a few plants for the living room. Living ones and not the artificial ones! Other things like a fish bowl can be a great touch. If you’re not the pet type, then don’t worry. Fishes are very low-maintenance. And, more of an ornament than anything.
4. Change the Lighting
Once you know enough about interior design, you start to appreciate the impact of lighting on your home. Let me tell you, it’s no small thing! If your overall lighting is way too dim or you use garish lighting in a few isolated corners, it can completely ruin the look. Lighting design for home and business has come a long way in the past few years. So, do your research. When you get the lighting just right, you barely have to worry about any other aspect of your design!
5. Break the Rules
Make sure you don’t give too much authority to articles just like this one! Interior design is an art form. Like any art form, the mainstream trends come and go. If you want to feel more comfortable in your home, then inject your personality into it. If you get a sudden impulse, who cares if it’s out of season? Try it out and take a step back. If it doesn’t work, you can always try something new. I’m sure that if people were a little more creative with their interior design, they’d feel more comfortable in their homes.
